MEDICAL GENETICS

Medical genetics is a relatively new specialty gaining importance in the diagnosis and treatment of many multi-system disorders. The department of medical genetics at Narayana Hrudayalaya began in November 2005. We have facilities for screening, investigating, diagnosing, and counseling a range of inherited conditions including:

• Congenital heart disease
• Dysmorphic syndromes and developmental delay
• Chromosomal disorders
• Inherited metabolic disorders
• Skeletal dysplasias and inherited growth disorders
• Hereditary cancers
• Inherited neurological disorders
• Inherited deafness and blindness
• Inherited vascular disorders and haemoglobinopathies
• Couples who are married within close blood relations (consanguinity)
• Congenital anomalies and inherited birth defects
• Couples with infertility or recurrent miscarriages due to genetic problems
• Pregnant women at risk of  a genetic disorder

Facilities for doing chromosome analysis, specialized studies such as FISH for micro-deletion syndromes, DNA studies for single gene disorders and a wide range of special biochemical investigations for inherited metabolic disorders are available in our department.
