Asha Dinesh Institute for Advanced Surgeries

“Asha Dinesh Institute for Advanced Surgeries” is sponsored by Mrs. and Mr. K. Dinesh, co-founder of Infosys, to create a center of excellence for organ transplantation. This institute located on the 4th floor of Narayana Hrudayalaya Institute of Medical Sciences has 6 modern operation theatres and 67 beds equipped with advanced monitoring facility for patients recovering from complex surgeries. This infrastructure is created primarily for heart, lung, liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation.

Organ transplantation in India is still in its infancy. This is primarily because of the lack of awareness and high cost. A typical liver transplantation on a child by using a small portion of related donor’s liver in India costs approximately Rs.30 lakh, which is beyond the means of most Indians. As of now, no single institution has emerged as a leader in this area of advanced surgery. Our intention is to create a premier institution in the area of organ transplant primarily for the working class people.

INTRODUCTION TO ORGAN TRANSPLANTATION:

Transplantation is an established and standard therapeutic tool in the management of end stage organ dysfunction. Transplantation of kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, cornea, bone marrow, pancreas and small bowel is now standard practice. However, in India, organ transplantation has had a chequered history. Problems of high cost, limited expertise and inability to sustain long term care has prevented the establishment of transplantation programmes. It is against this background that we propose to setup an Institute for Organ Transplantation.

 LIVER TRANSPLANT

At present, the liver transplant program in India is in its infancy. Only 1-2 centres perform the procedures regularly and the cost is very high-to the tune of 15-30,00,000 per patient.  End stage liver failure is common and usually a result of cirrhosis, congenital anomalies such and biliary atresia, infections, nutritional and alcohol. Cadaver and living related hepatic transplantation has a success rate of more than 75% at 5 years. Some can also be taken off immunosuppressant and this lead normal productive lives.

HEART AND LUNG TRANSPLANT

Heart transplantation when performed in the optimal patient has a 60% 5 year survival.
This is wonderful when compared to the quality of life with terminal heart failure.
PANCREAS AND SMALL BOWEL

These procedures are not performed in India. However, there is a definite and significant need to these procedures. We propose to pioneer these techniques in India.

KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION

Kidney is the most common solid organ to be transplanted. In India roughly 1 million new cases of End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) are added each year. Of these, only about 7% receive some form of renal replacement therapy-dialysis or transplantation. The rest simply die. Renal transplantation from either a cadaver (brain dead) donor or a relative will transform the life of any adult of child allowing then to lead normal productive lives.
