| Introduction to Neurology |
Neurology services began at Narayana Hrudayalaya in 2003. NarayanaInstitute of Neurosciences (NINS) was established in 2005 with an ambition to deliver tertiary high end Neurology and Neurosugery services to the masses at an affordable cost. The Institute was inaugurated by the then President Dr A. P. J Abdul Kalam and since then has established itself as a major Neurosciences center in the country. Presently Narayana Institute of Neurosciences is part of Narayana Multispeciality Hospital at the Narayana Hrudayalaya Health City, Bangalore.

| Comprehensive Epilepsy Care services: |
| Comprehensive Epilepsy Care services: The comprehensive epilepsy care team consists of an Epileptologist, Epilepsy neurosurgeon, Neurotechnologist, Psychiatrist, Neuropsychologist and Occupational therapist. The center provides both medical and surgical treatments for persons with epilepsy. The center has facilities for both short and long term Video EEG monitoring for persons with medically refractory epilepsies. Shortly the center will be equipped with facilities for PET scan, Interictal and Ictal SPECT scan, extraoperative invasive monitoring and intraoperative electro corticography. Epilepsy surgeries done include temporal lobectomy, corpus callosotomy, functional hemispherotomy and lesionectomy. |
| Stroke program |
| Stroke program: The stroke units consists of a dedicated team of Neurologists, Neurosurgeons, Neuroradiologists, and an Interventional Neurologist. It offers 24X7 care for patients with acute stroke with facilities for Intra Venous and Intra arterial thrombolysis for selected patients presenting within the window period. Similarly insitu Venous Thrombolysis is also undertaken in patients with Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis. The program also undertakes decompressive craniotomy as a life saving procedures in patients with large life threatening strokes. The stroke unit recently launched a “Stroke prevention program” for identifying and treating patients with high risk for stroke. |

| Movement disorder clinic |
| Movement disorder clinic deals with the management of Parkinson’s disease, Dystonia, Chorea, Hemifacial spasm, tremors, tics and other hypermotor and hypomotor movement disorders. The movement disorder clinic alsooffers Botoulinum toxin (Botox) injections for Blepharospasm, Dystonia, Hemifacial spasm, Cerebral palsy and other spastic conditions, Headache, etc. |
| Evaluation of complex neuromuscular disorders |
| Evaluation of complex neuromuscular disorders which includes Nerve conduction study, Needle EMG, Nerve & Muscle biopsy. The institute has facilities for Diagnosis, Management and treatment for patients with Myasthenia Gravis. Thymectomies are routinely undertaken by a dedicated team comprising Neurologists, Thoracic surgeons and Intensivists. It also has facilities for Plasmapheresis for management of Immune mediated Neurological disorders like GB syndrome, Myasthenic crises, preoperative preparation of patients with myasthenia gravis, etc. |

| The Team |
| Dr.Rajesh KN |
Dr.Rajesh KN , is a consultant in Neurology and is in charge of the Stroke Program and Myasthenia services in Narayana Hrudayalaya. He completed his MBBS and MD in General Medicine from Bangalore Medical College(BMC). After his Postgraduation he worked as a Senior Resident in Department of Neuro-Rehabilitation (DPNR) at NIMHANS. He completed his DM Neurology from GB Pant Hospital (MAMC), New Delhi. Subsequently he worked as a Senior Resident in the Department of Neurology, NIMHANS. During his stay in NIMHANS he also worked as a Senior Resident in Stroke Ward. He joined Narayana Hrudayalaya as a Consultant Neurologist and established Neurology Services in 2003. The center has Thrombolysed more than 15 patients with acute stroke and has undertaken more than 25 Thymectomies for Myasthenia gravis.

| Dr. Rajesh B Iyer |
Dr. Rajesh B Iyer, is a consultant in Neurology and Epileptology at Narayana Hrudayalaya. He completed his MBBS from Government Medical College, Trivandrum and M.D. in General Medicine from Government Medical College, Aurangabad. He did his superspecialty training (D.M. Neurology) and subsequently a one year fellowship in epilepsy at the prestigious Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical sciences and Technology, Trivandrum. Subsequently he served as a faculty at the same institute. He joined Narayana Hrudayalya in September 2005 and established the comprehensive epilepsy care center. The center has treated more than a thousand epilepsy patients and his epilepsy team has carried out epilepsy surgeries in 35 patients with medically refractory epilepsies. The epilepsy monitoring unit has also trained several neurotechnologists in Long term Video EEG monitoring.
Dr Iyer also runs a monthly epilepsy clinic at Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences and Armenian Church Trauma Center at Kolkata. He has been a faculty at several regional and national epilepsy conferences and workshops. He is also the present President of the Karnataka chapter of Multiple Sclerosis Society of India. |

| Dr Netravathi S Ellur |
Dr Netravathi S Ellur, Consultant Neurologist completed her MBBS from Dr B R Ambedkar Medical College, Bangalore and DM in Neurology from NIMHANS. Subsequently, she worked as a faculty at NIMHANS before joining Narayana Institute of Neurosciences. During her tenure at NIMHANS, apart from General Neurology she has worked extensively in Movement disorders. Presently she is in charge of the Movement disorder Clinic at Narayana Institute of Neurosciences. |

| Dr Vikram Huded |
Consultant Interventional Neurologist and Stroke specialist, did his MD (General Medicine) in Government Medical College, Mysore and DM (Neurology) in Seth G. S. Medical College & K.E.M. Hospital, Mumbai. Subsequently he completed a Fellowship in Interventional Neurology/Neuroradiology in King Edward Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. He also attended the Zurich Course on Interventional Neuroradiology, University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland. He is one of the few Interventional Neurologists in India to have used the PENUMBRA SYSTEM in acute stroke for clot retrieval. He is inchrage of the INTERVENTIONAL NEUROLOGY services at Narayana Institute of Neurosciences. |

- NEUROLOGY SERVICES WERE STARTED AT NARAYANA HRUDAYALAYA IN 2003.
- NARAYANA INSTITUTE OF NEUROSCIENCES (NINS) WAS INAGURATED IN 2005 BY THE THEN PRESIDENT OF INDIA DR. A. P .J ABDUL KALAM.
- THYMECTOMY FOR MYASTHENIA GRAVIS WAS STARTED IN 2005. SO FAR MORE THAN 25 PATIENTS HAVE UNDERGONE THYMECTOMY SUCCESSFULLY.
- COMPREHENSIVE EPILEPSY SERVICES WERE STARTED IN 2006. SO FOR MORE THAN 35 PATIENTS HAVE UNDERGONE SURGERY FOR MEDICALLY REFRACTORY EPILEPSY.
- COMPREHENSIVE INTERVENTION NEUROLOGY SERVICES STARTED IN 2007.
- STROKE CLINIC WAS STARTED IN 2007.
- MOVEMENT DISORDER AND BOTOX CLINIC STARTED IN 2009.
