Focuses on treatment for children living in the city slums
Bangalore June 10, 2009: Narayana Hrudayalaya, world’s largest pediatric cardiac hospital, has successfully treated its first patient from a tie-up with a Bangalore-based NGO, Yuva Bengaluru. Gayathri (11), diagnosed with Atrial Septal Defect or commonly referred to as a hole in the heart, was treated free of cost at the hospital under their Suvarna Arogya Chaitanya Scheme.
This scheme that falls under the National Rural Health Mission programme provides free treatment for children studying in government and government-aided schools.
Gayathri was suffering from this congenital disease and repeated attempts by her family for treatment from several government hospitals had yielded no results due to lack of funds. Yuva Bengaluru took the initiative of helping Gaythri’s family and approached Narayana Hrudayalaya. A 5-doctor team led by Dr. Devi Shetty, Chairman, Narayana Hrudayalaya and Dr. Colin John, Senior Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon, Narayana Hrudayalaya operated upon the child for four hours.
Kiran G, President, Yuva Bengaluru said, “We are extremely grateful to the authorities at Narayana Hrudayalaya for their prompt support and continued cooperation. We hope to save more lives through this association and ensure quality care to the needy children.”
The tie-up between Narayana Hrudayalaya and Yuva Bengaluru will allow the hospital to coordinate health camps and initiate social service activities. The NGO would also function as a point of contact between the hospital and the slum children who are in need of urgent medical attention.
