Dermatology - Rare Cases

Mrs. P is now 26 years of age. She has her hands full with a 50 hours work, a very 3-year-old son and wild life photographer husband. Add to this, her diagnosis of TIDM at age 20 years.
P was a college going girl when she first came to us. She was confused whether her unexplained weight loss of 8kg in 3weeks was a thing of joy or concert. There was no family history of diabetes and generally, health was never a problem with her family. P and her parents are numbered with shock when results were explained to them. She would at least an hour each day, three times a week learning to confront her condition, with the beta cell. Initial despair, health total breakdown, period of turbulence. Quiet, gradual acceptance- thus was the sequence over the next one year; she had to then deal with her doubts and fears of finding a mate. Again beta cell team stood by her and she found herself a very compassionate partner. We has a few sessions to allay the fears of both families about P’s ability to have a normal married life and then have children. Shortly after this, was the wedding following her pregnancy, which was a smooth sailing, and Mrs. P is really an example for every newly diagnosed type1.

Mr. B is a very happy, so lucky, compassionate person who had brought his ailing neighbor for a health check-up. He had all that a 30year old could aspire for a high profile job at a MNC, a working wife and a healthy child. The only complaint was scarcity of time so he wanted to make the most of the waiting time at the hospital and just went for a thorough check.
He was shocked beyond description when he found sugars were 750 mg/dl! And the fact that he had no symptoms!! For the first time he paid attention to his weight for 98 kg on his 5’5” height frame. And to think he had a gold medal at national level for athletics in the college days.
At beta cell, he had counseling sessions with the team. His wife and mother participated too and learnt how diabetes was there common enemy. They learned together as a family the strategies to motivate and help each other stay positive and cheerful to cope with a lifelong disease. The role of medical treatment was explained and self-monitoring. Protocols were given to the patient and his family. This could be the story to the patient how diabetes is a SILENT disease.

Mrs. D was a 28-year-old pregnant lady who came into beta cell. She had delivered a baby girl earlier who had died after birth in the neonatal unit after battling with jaundice. Now Mrs. D was 9 weeks into her pregnancy and did not want to leave anything to chance. Her ob-jyn had a suspicion about her sugar levels being uncared for during her first pregnancy and just had her screene for sensational diabetes. Her fasting sugar level was 129 mg/dl! She obviously needed to follow-up with a diabetes team. She was subjected to amore complete diagnostic test and started on insulin injections. She was meeting the beta cell team on a weekly basis and reporting sugars almost on a daily basis. She is now just counting days as her due date is nearing.

MR. T is 76 years old. He was detected diabetic when he was all of 35 years of age. He was a married and has a family of his own. It was a lingering fear of diabetes that had prompted him to check his sugar levels, those days. Both parents and both sets of grand parents were known diabetics and Mr. T was almost anticipating it when his first feeling just led him to a laboratory. His fears were confirmed. He was started on oral medication immediately. He followed all rules to the last word and led a very disciplined life. All was fine until the age of 60 years when there was some up level an the career front which frustrated him and he save up all medications and that landed him in hospital ICU. Since then he is also on insulin, to keep the sugars under control. And now his mantra is “Exercise, diet and insulin and insulin- no matter what”! he had minified to remain totally free from all diabetic complications, keeps a close watch on his sugar levels and has dedicated his life to a cause that is very dear to his heart. He certainly an inspiration to anybody with diabetes.
