Most cancers can be prevented or detected early. Modification of lifestyle and avoidance of high-risk habits are the two most effective means to lower the risk of developing cancer. Some cancers are hereditary – these high-risk individuals can be identified by clinical evaluation and genetic tests.
Targeted screening can identify cancer at pre-cancer or early stage. This not only improves the chance for cure but also lowers the side effects related to cancer treatment. Hence, screening needs to be individualized based on clinical examination.
The Mazumdar-Shaw Cancer Center has a dedicated cancer prevention & screening service. We offer cancer screening to most common cancers such as mouth, voice box, breast, lungs, stomach, intestine, bladder and gynaecological cancers. In addition, individuals with genetic predisposition to develop cancers can be identified through genetic screening.
Unhealthy behaviors such as smoking, immoderate alcohol use, and poor diet are common risk factors for cancer. Even when people know they should change their behavior for the sake of their own long-term health, many struggle to change and find it difficult to make tradeoffs between immediate gratification and benefits that are distant in time and largely intangible.
