Neuro Oncology

Neuro-oncology provides an integrated, multi-disciplinary platform for clinicians and basic scientists developing improved therapies for the treatment of adults and children with brain tumors. The aim of this division of NH is to deliver cutting edge and state-of-the-art neurological services on par with the best in the world. NH team consists of five consultant neurosurgeons - with expertise in various dimensions of advanced micro neurosurgical techniques, radiation oncologists and medical oncologists, backed with a dedicated team of support staff. NH has three full-fledged Operation Theatres equipped with Operating microscopes, Ultrasonic aspirator and Nerve Integrity Monitor. Neurosurgical intensive care unit (ICU) and an established neuro-rehabilitation program are incorporated in the inpatient care. Advanced technology has enabled surgical solutions to complex skull base tumours which were considered inoperable’ earlier. For Example, pituitary tumors can now be resected completely using an endoscope which is 4mm in diameter, through the nose. Opening of skull is not required in most of the situations. Regular follow up in NH's dedicated unit offers best hopes for timely surgery and rehabilitation of children with brain tumours as well as in congenital brain and spine conditions like hydrocephalus and spina bifida. Early evaluation and multidisciplinary approach will help in management and rehabilitation of these children. Certain complex brain tumours can be treated through radiation and do not require surgery. Stereotactic Radiosurgery and radiotherapy (SRS/SRT) are high precision techniques that use invasive and frameless devices for accurate localization and treatment of small deep-seated brain tumours.
