The term YOGA has its verbal root in Sanskrit. Yoga is that which joins. In the traditional terminology it is joining of jivatma with paramatma the individual self with the universal self. Patanjali defines in his second aphorism , yoga is a process of gaining control over the mind. By controlling the mind we reach our original state. Yoga vasishta is one of the valuable texts on yoga; the essence of yoga is beautifully portrayed thus, yoga is called a skilful trick to calm down the mind. It is a skilful subtle process and not a brutal, mechanical, gross effort to stop the thoughts in the mind. Patanjali‘s yoga sutra is the eight-limbed yoga, which gives a total view and systematic approach for developing the mind. Asana is the third limb of the Astanga yoga.
